Complex Small-Holder Agriculture in Rainforest Buffer Zone, Sri Lanka, Supports Endemic Birds

چکیده
The Sinharaja rainforest in southwestern Sri Lanka is a protected forest largely agriculture-dominated landscape. In keeping with global UNESCO biosphere reserves planning, the surrounded by buffer zone of regenerating and villages small tea plots multi-strata tree gardens (homegardens). Globally, however, conservation planning lacks standards on management. We ask what relationships exist between village land use bird assemblages, which are effective ecosystem indicators. Birds have been little studied across vegetation structure actively managed, large, zones. To that end, we ran spatially- temporally-replicated point counts gardens, fragments, within village. Tree held greater abundance birds habitat association, concern, diet, endemic species than fragments or plots. Forest hosted statistically similar numbers some subsets, but their assemblages differed. plots, shade richness correlated richness. Our results support argument for programs to complex small-scale tree-based agroforestry embedded forest.
